“I had more fun making diet plans for my coworkers and explaining fat content of certain nuts and why certain dressings are bad than I had doing my actual job.”
For us, it’s like seamless. I never feel like I’m doing any work. We have an office on 29th and I live pretty nearby, so we work out of my apartment a lot and we have a lot of stuff to do. It’s a lot running this business, but it’s fun. We sit there and it doesn’t feel like I’m working. Fitness and health is a huge part of my life. It’s something that I do every single day. So for me to be able to work in that space and build something that I know makes me happy and I know that will make customers happy just gives me so much more enjoyment than working for an energy trading company where it doesn’t mean anything to me at the end of the day. It really provides a space for me to be happy.” – Mike
Mike Fribourg and David Asser are childhood best friends turned business partners. Their passion for fitness and nutrition started after the age of 18 and they never looked back, adjusting their diets and workout routines to reach their nutrition and fitness goals. After both building careers of their own, they found out that their passions were elsewhere, so they created Mike and Dave’s, a healthy alternative treat shop. Their dedication led to their first brick and mortar store, which opened in October of last year.
Mike and Dave’s prides itself in being a space where all people, no matter their diet or nutritional goals, can have a place to get a treat. Their frozen, non-dairy soft serve comes with healthy mix-ins and flavor combinations that truly are out of this world.
Some people really care, some people don’t care, and we wanted a place where the stuff still tasted really, really good for everybody who’s not like watching every little gram of sugar, but where the people who do care about that can relax too.” – David
This dynamic duo knows how to work as a team. They care for each other, and try to make the other’s life as easy as possible. There is an unspoken understanding between the two that they will be there to support each other when times get rough, and when priorities shift.
Mike’s a full-time MBA student, so when he’s off of school, he’s in here doing op[erational] stuff just as much as me, if not more. And then when he goes back to school, there’s an internal pull that I know that he knows that it’s understood that he might have to write a ten-page paper the next day, so I need to be here double the time.” – David
Mike and Dave are around each other almost all the time. Whether it’s working out together, cooking meals for one another, doing errands, or running the business together, they are inseparable. They say that you shouldn’t go into business with friends, but Mike and David are the exception. They feed off each other’s enthusiasm, and strive to continuously come up with new flavors to add to their growing list. There is really no other way to describe them other than the best of friends. The bond between them spans over a decade and a half, and will only continue to grow stronger.
We get each other, you know? It just makes things a lot easier. Starting a business is one of the most challenging things we’ve both ever had to face in our lives and it’s daunting on you. It’s daunting on the soul, it’s daunting on your head, on your family and friends. We become very aggravated all the time because we have a lot to deal with. So at least being with someone who makes it more fun and makes it easier means all that much more.” – Mike
Mike and David plan on making this summer an amazing one (sunshine, non-dairy soft serve, you can’t go wrong). They want to open other locations, but for now will start revamping and preparing for the months ahead. One thing is for sure: as long as they have each other, they’ll be able to accomplish anything.
