“I ate a hot dog a day everyday for 10 years… and now I’m back at it.”
Hank’s Juicy Beef is just my way of taking something that I loved as a kid and still love as an adult and sharing it with the people in hopes of making their day better. One of the best memories I have was a day where two separate families had drove from out of state to come get some Hank’s Juicy Beef. I remember talking to one family; they were a three generation family: the grandma, the mom, and the kid. They had told me they drove from Philadelphia to come here because they heard I had authentic Juicy Italian Beef and hot dogs. Immediately, I asked, ‘How was the traffic?’ in which they replied, ‘Fine. Now give me some hot dogs,’ *laughs* it’s stuff like that that put a smile on my face and keeps me going.”
Meet Hank. A Yale Alumni, former financial planner, and maybe just one of the more interesting people you will meet in the food scene. One faithful college day at Yale, Hank learned about the Theory of Utility Curve in one of his political science class and linked it to people and happiness. He knew he wanted to make people happy.
After graduating from Yale, Hank spent some time in Shanghai and fell in love. Despite his limited vocabulary, Hank was able to explore Shanghai through its lovely people, its electrifying yet exquisite atmosphere, and of course, its delicious food. After returning to The States, Hank worked in the financial field as a financial planner for some time before finally setting out to create Hank’s Juicy Beef.
Sitting down with Hank at his restaurant located in City Hall, one can feel the air of contrast; the professional business vibe of City Hall is the polar opposite of the cool laidback ambiance at the inside of Hank’s Juicy Beef. And this is very intentional. When asked to describe himself in a few words, he just laid his back against the leather couch and said, “Look at my restaurant.” Hank designed the place around the theme of inviting friends over for a kick back. Inside, you find a comfortable leather couch, a bathroom that’s cleaner than the Starbucks a block away, and even a Michael Jordan memorabilia (Respect). Much like his restaurant, Hank loves to have fun and doesn’t take himself too seriously. In the mornings, he loves to come in and man all the stations. At the end of the day, he loves to wind down and, at times, go downstairs to the innovative kitchen and experiment with the food in hopes of coming up with some new menu items.
If you ever come into Hank’s Juicy Beef, you will find Hank running all over the place. A man of many talents, Hank has performed almost every task imaginable to keep the hot dogs flowing and the people smiling. This is Hank’s way of providing utility and happiness to people. Because according to Hank, all we need is peace, love, and juicy beef.
